One Puppy Lost to Distemper. One Puppy Protected.

You can see the difference between these two puppies. One is shaking uncontrollably because he has distemper, a deadly virus that has attacked his nervous system.

This puppy was suffering from neurological symptoms caused by canine distemper. Sadly, he did not survive.

The puppies were found at a monastery in Mandalay. One of the local feeders we work with saw that they needed help and brought them to a member of our team who runs a clinic in the area.

Distemper is a highly contagious virus that can attack a dog’s respiratory, digestive and nervous systems. It can cause fever, coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, tremors and seizures. Puppies without vaccines are especially vulnerable. Sadly, we could not save this puppy. His sibling is now safe and receiving vaccines to protect him from distemper, parvovirus, rabies and other serious diseases. He will also be neutered when he is old enough.

Why TNVR Matters TNVR stands for trap, neuter, vaccinate and return.

Vaccination protects puppies from deadly diseases that spread quickly among street dogs. Neutering them when they are old enough prevents more puppies from being born on the streets. Myanmar has a severe and growing street dog overpopulation crisis. TNVR protects the dogs already here and reduces the number of puppies born into a life without reliable food, shelter or veterinary care. It is the humane answer to this crisis. Our work does not stop with TNVR. We also care for the sickest and most vulnerable animals when their feeders cannot afford treatment. Without these feeders, many dogs would never reach a clinic.

Myanmar’s Crisis Is Getting Worse

We have shared before how much Myanmar is suffering. It is getting worse. Civil war continues. Food, medicine and basic supplies are increasingly difficult to find. Many people are struggling to meet their own needs, yet they still feed street dogs and bring sick animals to our team. Myanmar is facing this crisis with little attention from the rest of the world. One of these puppies could not be saved. His sibling is now vaccinated and safe. When he is old enough, he will be neutered and will not add another litter to Myanmar’s streets.
