What Do You NOT See?

What Do You NOT See?
Take a moment and really look at this photo.
You see a sweet face, cared for and loved by the local community in Yangon, Myanmar. He looks healthy and content.
But I want you to ask yourself a different question.
What do you NOT see?
There is a well-known parable about dogs and cats floating down a river. As more and more animals drift downstream, people rush to pull them to safety. Veterinarians treat their injuries, volunteers comfort frightened animals, and everyone works tirelessly to save those already in crisis.
Then one person quietly turns and begins walking upstream.
When asked why, they simply reply, "I'm going to find out why these dogs and cats keep falling into the river."
I've always loved that parable because it perfectly describes how I think about animal welfare.
At Let's Save The Strays International, we will always help the dogs and cats already in the river. Every month our teams in Myanmar perform hundreds of sterilization surgeries, vaccinate against rabies, and treat animals that desperately need our help.
But we also spend our time walking upstream.
Through Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR), community engagement, and education, we work to prevent suffering before it begins.
That is why this photo matters.
You don't see the puppies that were never born into hardship. You don't see the disease that was prevented, the child who was never bitten, or the dog who was never poisoned because his community chose compassion instead.
Those stories don't make headlines.
But they are the reason we do this work.
This sweet face represents what success really looks like. A healthy community dog, accepted and cared for, living peacefully where he belongs.
Sometimes we measure success by the lives we save.
I think we should also measure it by the suffering we prevent.
We'll always be there for the dogs and cats already in the river.
But we'll never stop walking upstream.
Because that is where lasting change begins. And that needs to be the goal, lasting change.
