Our Work in Mandalay

Mandalay was the first city where Let's Save The Strays International established a permanent TNVR presence.

We began our work in Mandalay in 2019, responding to urgent community requests for humane alternatives to poisoning and ineffective population control. At the time, there were no government-funded animal welfare services, and dogs suffered needlessly, often being poisoned as a means of population control.

In the same year, we formalized and expanded the program in partnership with Animals Australia, our largest and most consistent supporter.

Today, our Mandalay team treats approximately 250 to 300 dogs per month, providing consistent, high-quality care.

Our Approach

Project sites are selected based on community requests, dog population density, and proximity to people. We work closely with local feeders, volunteers, monks, community leaders, school teachers, and parents who know the dogs and their territories.

Each dog is humanely captured and safely anesthetized before undergoing spay or neuter surgery using proper sterile technique. Every animal receives antibiotics and pain medication, is vaccinated and dewormed, and is treated with Bravecto for fleas, ticks, and mange. While under anesthesia, each dog is ear-notched for identification.

Dogs recover under supervision for one to two days before being safely returned.

Medical Care Beyond TNVR

In addition to routine TNVR care, our veterinary teams monitor dogs for transmissible venereal tumors (TVT), a contagious, sexually transmitted cancer that is very common among street dog populations in Asia.

Left untreated, TVT can cause painful, disfiguring facial, genital, and internal tumors and is often fatal.

When TVT is identified, affected dogs receive chemotherapy and follow-up care after surgical healing until they are fully recovered.
